Quality
These are scanned images of real black and white photographs. This is to say that the photos were shot with a film camera, developed and printed in my own little wet darkroom and then scanned into digital images. As such, there is inherent degradation, a loss of quality, in the digital image from the original paper image. There are two reasons why quality is willingly sacrificed by going this route instead of just shooting as digital in the first place.
The most important reason cannot be evidenced here at a web site. The quality of the print, the paper one and not the digital, is astronomically higher. The resolution produced by a medium format film camera is far better than can be achieved by medium format digital cameras priced upward of $4,000, let alone the more commonly used DLSR's.
The other reason is a combination of personal enjoyment and adhering to the adage that you will get out of something what you put into that something. The art of darkroom work is a blend of science, aesthetics and intuition that simultaneously is driving and relaxing. Also, results are largely dependent upon effort. The work required to produce paper prints is exponentially higher than what is required to produce digital images. The resulting paper image reflects this effort.
